Between the Upper and Lower Engadine, and the door to the park.
Zernez sits at the point where the Lower Engadine meets the Upper, and where the Ofen Pass road climbs east into the Swiss National Park. Nearly every visit to the park passes through it — it holds the park's visitor centre, the trailhead for the Chamanna Cluozza route, and the last real supermarket and fuel before the pass road.
The park visitor centre
Zernez's national park centre is the place to check current trail status, hut availability, and seasonal closures before heading out — worth a stop even for visitors who've already read the rules, since conditions and openings shift year to year.
Engadine architecture, without the crowds of the more photographed villages
Zernez has its own share of traditional Engadine houses with sgraffito facades, deep-set windows, and the characteristic double entrance gates — a lower-key introduction to the style before visiting Guarda or Ardez, which draw more day-trip traffic.
Using Zernez as a base
Its position at the Ofen Pass junction makes Zernez the practical base for tackling more than one park trail across a multi-day stay, rather than day-tripping in from further down the valley.
