The park's real high-alpine route starts at a hotel car park.
Il Fuorn sits directly on the Ofen Pass road, a short drive from Zernez, with the trailhead beginning practically at the door of the Hotel Parc Naziunal Il Fuorn. From there the path climbs steadily through Val dal Botsch to the Margunet at 2,339 m — the park's genuine high-alpine outing, above the treeline for a long stretch and with the widest views any of the park's trails offer.
The climb
This is a steady, sustained ascent rather than a technical scramble, but it's the steepest of the park's three main routes and the only one that spends real time above 2,000 m. Expect open, rocky terrain for the upper half, with marmots common around the meadow sections lower down.
Beyond the Margunet
For hikers continuing further, the route from Il Fuorn also connects onward over the Fuorcla Val dal Botsch and the Sur il Foss crossing into Val Mingèr and Val S-charl — a serious multi-hour traverse for experienced mountain hikers, not a casual extension of the Margunet day hike.
Why come here instead of Trupchun
Trade wildlife odds for altitude and views: Il Fuorn won't match Trupchun for animal sightings, but it's the only trail that gets you into true high-alpine terrain and rewards the effort with panoramas across the length of the park that the valley-floor routes simply can't offer.
